In some cases, it may no longer be necessary to extract teeth to align crowding due to a procedure called reproximation or slenderizing. Front and back teeth may be slenderized using a diamond disk or sandpaper strips to remove a small amount of enamel from the sides of the teeth, allowing them to align better.
Slenderizing has been done since the 1940s and the results have proven to be effective and stable. The small amount of enamel removed from the tooth is not enough to cause a higher incidence of decay. Slenderizing will not cause gum disease and does not harm the gum tissue.
Every case is different and not everyone is a candidate for slenderizing. Dr. Scher will take comprehensive records to evaluate your case for the proper treatment.
